FCC Fines Richmond Station!
The FCC once again came out in full force when it decided to fine WBZU
in Richmond, formally, WVGO, for something deemed offensive from a broadcast
of Howard's show.
WBZU was fined $10,000 dollars for two alleged violations of the FCC's
vague indecency statue. The broadcasts in question are supposedly from
October 23, 1995 and this past June 3rd and were cited due to sexual references.
Ironically, WBZU dropped Howard's show last Spring due in part to a
format change and pressure from a local group opposed to Howard's show.
At this point, there has been no action against Infinity Broadcasting
or other stations that carry the show by the FCC. What this may mean is
that the FCC is only pursuing a fine in the city where the complaint was
filed, and not all cities that carried the show. Since obscenity is based
on "local" standards, that might be the fairest way to handle
these alleged violations.
