Howard Kicks Off K-Modern Rock!

k-rock logoNot since 1986 has K-Rock (WXRK FM) been so bold as to play new music when it's "Outrageous Rock" format was dropped for Classic Rock. But after Howard's show on Friday 1/5/96, K-Rock flipped it's format to Modern Rock, much the way several other Infinity stations such as KROQ, WBCN and KOME have done in past few years.

To kick off the format change, Howard played DJ for about two hours after his show. According to Howard, some of the morning show affiliates that have the same format carried his mini two hour DJ shift.

During that now-famous DJ shift, Howard assumed the air name Douche Baggie Bag and Robin became Super Snatch. The format change premiered with Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These", a remake of the Eurythmics hit from the '80s. Howard, I mean, Douche Baggie, played cuts from Green Day, Hole, Candle Box, 7 Mary 3, the Beastie Boys, and strangely enough, Cypress Hill.

By 1PM, Howard and Robin bailed out and the music continued without a DJ. However, the commercials continued on what seemed like a regular schedule and the new slick promos filled the air touting K-Rock as "The New K-Rock".
